A Cyclone 10 LP orderable part number records the die, core voltage, package and qualified grades in one string. Altera's official example 10CL120ZF780I8GES reads as 10C | L | 120 | Z | F | 780 | I | 8 | G | ES: Cyclone 10, LP variant, 119,088 logic elements, 1.0 V core, FineLine BGA, 780 pins, industrial temperature, fabric speed grade 8, RoHS 6 material and engineering-sample status.

For a production comparison, Altera lists 10CL120YF780C8G, 10CL120YF780I7G and 10CL120ZF780I8G. These are not interchangeable spellings. Voltage, temperature and speed differ, while the absent ES indicates production rather than engineering-sample status.

Density, package and body-size choices #

The official member codes are 006, 010, 016, 025, 040, 055, 080 and 120. Their exact logic-element counts are 6,272; 10,320; 15,408; 24,624; 39,600; 55,856; 81,264; and 119,088. The rounded product names are useful for navigation, but the three-digit member code belongs on the RFQ.

Cyclone 10 LP uses four package families. E144 is a 144-pin enhanced thin quad flat pack, M164 a 164-pin Micro FineLine BGA, U256/U484 Ultra FineLine BGAs, and F484/F780 FineLine BGAs. Altera's package table gives E144 as 22 × 22 mm at 0.5 mm pitch, M164 as 8 × 8 mm at 0.5 mm pitch, U256 as 14 × 14 mm at 0.8 mm pitch, U484 as 19 × 19 mm at 0.8 mm pitch, F484 as 23 × 23 mm at 1.0 mm pitch and F780 as 29 × 29 mm at 1.0 mm pitch.

Not every density exists in every package. For example, Altera's current package plan shows 10CL025 in E144 and U256, while 10CL120 is available in F484 and F780. A larger density therefore cannot be substituted without first confirming that the same package is offered and belongs to a documented migration path.

Core voltage, temperature and speed #

The Y core-voltage field means 1.2 V; Z means the lower 1.0 V option. This is not a performance suffix. A Y-to-Z change affects the power rails and device capabilities, so it is not a drop-in purchasing decision even when package characters match.

The decoder lists C for commercial 0°C to 85°C, I for industrial −40°C to 100°C and A for automotive −40°C to 125°C. The overview also points to separate extended-temperature support information for selected devices. Buyers should verify the exact OPN rather than infer 125°C support from a generic I character.

Fabric speed grades run 6, 7, 8, with 6 fastest. A faster device may be considered against a slower requirement only when all physical, voltage and qualification fields match and the released Quartus project is recompiled. Timing closure, power and customer AVL approval remain necessary.

Replacement screening and pin-to-pin boundaries #

The safe first-pass filter is strict: retain 10CL, core voltage, package type and package code. Then compare density, speed, temperature and material. A wider temperature range or faster speed grade can enter engineering review; it is not automatically approved.

Reject a claimed pin-to-pin alternate when the package changes between E144, M164, U256, U484, F484 or F780. Different letter-number combinations change lead or ball count, body size, pitch and pinout. The same numeric count is also insufficient: U484 and F484 both have 484 balls, but use different pitches and body sizes.

Even an identical package code is only a prerequisite. Altera's package plan identifies migration combinations, and the pin files and Quartus Pin Migration View must confirm every assigned I/O, bank, clock, configuration and dedicated pin for both exact devices. The design must stay within the resources of the smallest migration device.

For example, 10CL025YU256C8G and 10CL025YU256I7G preserve family, density, voltage and U256 footprint. The industrial candidate has a wider low-temperature range and a faster speed grade, so it can be screened as an alternate when supply is tight. It may cost more and still requires timing, power, qualification and AVL review. Changing either candidate to E144 is not pin-to-pin.

Procurement checklist #

1. Copy the complete released OPN, not only the 10CL density prefix. 2. Match L variant, member code and Y/Z core voltage. 3. Treat the package letter and numeric code as one footprint field. 4. Confirm body size, pitch, pin count, shipping media and moisture handling against the exact product record. 5. Verify temperature and speed in the qualified Quartus build. 6. Keep G material status and reject ES for production unless explicitly authorized. 7. Check the official package plan and pin information for both exact densities. 8. Run Quartus Pin Migration View and recompile timing and pin assignments. 9. Record the accepted full OPN on the quotation, PO and incoming-inspection documents.

Conclusion #

Cyclone 10 LP substitution is safest when the physical and voltage fields do not move. In 10CL025YU256I7G, Y fixes the 1.2 V core, U256 fixes the 14 × 14 mm, 0.8 mm-pitch package, and I7G fixes temperature, speed and material. A faster or wider-temperature option may be a useful shortage alternate, but a different package or core voltage is a redesign boundary rather than a pin-to-pin replacement.
