Why the paper trail matters more than a clean photo #
In shortage and open-market sourcing, sellers often lead with photographs: a reel on the bench, a close-up of the laser marking, a barcode label. A clean photo builds confidence, but it does not prove where the part came from. A component's history — which fab made it, which channel moved it, which lot it belongs to — is recorded in documents, not in pixels.

The strength of that answer depends heavily on the channel. A shipment from a manufacturer-authorized distributor inherits traceability from the OSM. A purchase from an independent broker must reconstruct that same history through inspection, test reports and internal records — because the broker is not in the manufacturer's direct chain.
The document set buyers should request #
Not every purchase needs every document, but the following set is the baseline for high-value, allocation, or shortage parts.

A buyer does not need to perform that testing, but should require the resulting evidence when the channel cannot offer manufacturer chain-of-custody.
Authorized vs independent channels: where the proof bars sit #
Franchise (authorized) distributors carry stock that the manufacturer has shipped through its own channel. Traceability is inherited: the distributor can usually provide lot, date code, and ship-date information tied to the OSM. The buyer's job is to confirm the franchise relationship and reconcile the lot details on the packing list.
Independent distributors and brokers are not in the manufacturer's direct chain. Their stock may be perfectly genuine, but the only proof is what they document themselves. Here, AS6081-style incoming inspection, X-ray or electrical test reports, and a clear chain-of-custody record become the substitute for manufacturer authorization. If an independent seller cannot or will not produce that evidence for a high-risk part, the safer move is to walk away or qualify a different source.
The practical rule: match the documentation burden to the channel. Light paperwork is acceptable from an authorized franchise; it is a red flag from an unknown broker on an allocated device.
Reading the label and paperwork for consistency #
Documents only help if they agree with each other and with the physical part. Before acceptance, cross-check:
- Manufacturer name, part number and suffix on the outer label, inner label and
reel or tray.
- Lot number and date code repeated consistently across label, packing list and
any test report.
- Country of origin and barcode format that match the expected manufacturer site.
- Quantity on the label, in the packing list and in the invoice.
- Date code that is plausible for the package revision and silicon stepping.
A single mismatch — for example, a label lot that does not appear on the packing list, or a date code that predates the package marking — is enough to pause the acceptance and request clarification.
Red flags in the paper trail #
Some signals should stop an order regardless of price or lead time:
- The seller refuses a CoC or any lot documentation.
- Lot, date code or quantity differ between documents.
- No MSL or bake record is provided for a BGA or QFN that clearly needs one.
- "Engineering samples" or "ES" parts are offered as production-grade stock.
- Date code and package revision are inconsistent with the device's known history.
- The offer leans entirely on photos while documentation is vague or missing.
None of these proves a fake on its own, but each one widens the gap between what is claimed and what can be verified — and that gap is where production risk lives.
